Thermo-Auricular Therapy - Hopi Ear Candles |
Hopi Ear Candles have been used for treating ear, nose and throat problems and in cleansing and ceremonial rituals dating back centuries to the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and Asians. The name 'Hopi' comes from the Native American tribe who introduced this gentle therapy to the West. The word 'Hopi' means 'peaceful people' and the Hopis were indeed renowned for their healing and spiritual way of life. |
History of the Hopi Tribe
The Hopis originate from the pueblos of South West America, but their language is quite different. They live in northeast Arizona at the southern end of the Black Mesa - 'mesa' being the name given to small isolated flat-topped hills with three steep sides called the 1st Mesa, 2nd Mesa and the 3rd Mesa. The Hopi village of Oraibi on the 3rd Mesa started in 1050 and is the oldest in North America that was inhabited continuously. This Wall Mural is from the Hopi Tower of The Grand Canyon. |
Today's Hopi Indians are divided into the traditionalists: those who preserve ancient lands and customs, and the new Hopis: those who work with outsiders - they still love their traditions, arts and land, but also love the modern American way of life.
Hopi Ear Candles
The Hopi Candle is a hollow tube formed of cotton flax. The fabric is first of all 'marinaded' in honey, beeswax, and herbs such as chamomile, sage and St John's Wort. The Hopi tribe have, of course, been aware of the healing properties of these products for centuries and genuine Hopi Candles are made in the same time honoured tradition.

The Treatment
After a short consultation the patient is made comfortable, lying on one side on the couch in the relaxing atmosphere of the treatment room that may burn scented candles and play soft music if desired. Following a brief examination of the ear with an otoscope to determine the condition, the therapist will gently place a lighted candle in the entrance to the outer auditory canal. There will be a pleasant 'crackling' and 'hissing' of the flame and as it burns and the candle will produce gentle, local heat - the warm air combined with the herbs and oils contained in the candle itself will gently soften the wax and draw it up into the candle. |
During this treatment, pressure in the inner-ear is normalised and many people find this a useful treatment to have before flying. It has also proved helpful to people with sinus complaints by helping to clear congestion in the head.
After burning to the red circle marked about 4 inches from the base, the candle will be removed and extinguished in a glass of water. The other ear will then be treated in the same way and afterwards the patient lies back and enjoys a massage of the ears and facial area, with special attention paid to the sinuses and lymphatic areas.
The massage of the ears at the end of the treatment ensures that all the areas of the body are covered (The Foetus Theory - Paul Nogier), making Hopi Ear Candles a truly holistic treatment.
Although each candle only takes about 10 minutes to burn down, the whole session will probably last at least 45 - 60 minutes and will be very relaxing. It is normal to book a set of three, once-weekly treatments in order to experience the full benefits of the therapy. |
